PORTLAND -- A trip back in time takes a big step forward as Portland s stately Pittock Mansion undergoes a million-dollar renovation.
On a regular summer day, 500 visitors take in the site, which is now surrounded by scaffolding.
The mansion is being renovated to celebrate its 100th anniversary next year.
Construction crews are focused on the four once-regal terraces surrounding the mansion. Ceilings below the terraces show bubbles where water has been leaking in. Walls have stippling where rusty pipes were also leaking. And the basement below a terrace has to be regularly cleared of standing water.
And that s just part of the work being completed over the next four months. The renovation should wrap up in October, well in advance of the centennial scheduled for February.
The City of Portland is paying for about half of the renovation and the rest was raised by the Pittock Mansion Society.
