PORTLAND -- A Portland police officer shot in the line of duty was awarded the bureau's top honor Tuesday.

Officer Parik Singh was shot in the stomach while responding to reports of a distraught man in Southeast Portland in March, 2011.

He was awarded the Medal of Valor and Police Star for his devotion to duty and courage in the line of fire.

Eight other officers were honored for their actions that day, officers whom Singh credits with saving his life.

I thank every single one of the people on that stage today. They saved my life, he said Tuesday. There's nothing I can say, but someday I hope that I can show them how thankful I am.

It took Singh nine-and-a-half months to return to duty. The man who shot him was sentenced to 35-years in prison.
