PORTLAND Portlanders weighed in Wednesday night on the city's plans to cut $25 million in services and programs.
A large crowd gathered in Northeast Portland to hear City Council describe either/or scenarios. For example, full funding for community groups like the East Portland Action Plan might have to be sacrificed for an early learning program at a local school.
So we re asking all of you to engage in these Solomon's choices, where there isn t a good answer, said Commissioner Amanda Fritz.
Several groups at the meeting said the potential cuts could mean the difference between life and death.
There are extensive areas of Portland that don t have sidewalks, said East Portland resident Walter Lersch. There was recently a tragic death that was probably avoidable if they were in place.
Five-year old Morgan Maynard-Cook died while crossing Southeast 136th Avenue last week. There are no sidewalks outside her house, and her family members said that was a contributing factor in her death.
