NEWBERG -- A toddler was struck by a vehicle while he was getting pulled across a Newberg street in a toy car late Monday afternoon, police said. The one-year-old boy later died in the hospital.

Little Alex Gastelum was with his 15-year-old sister, Jessica Garcia and a 13-year-old cousin when he was hit by the car, according to family members. He was flown in a LifeFlight helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland but could not be saved, authorities said.

The Ford sedan was traveling westbound on 4th Avenue when it struck the toy car with Alex inside, near Meridian Street just before 4 p.m., according to Capt. Jeff Kosmicki. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.

Alex's sister told KGW she saw the sedan coming from two blocks away and can't understand why the driver did not see the three of them crossing the street.

We thought we could cross and we were past the yellow line over there. Then the car just came and hit my cousin on the knee and she fell, Garcia said. Alex was all the way over there and he was so pale and white.

Garcia said they were just trying to take Alex to a nearby park to play in the sun, and now he's gone.

The accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed, Kosmicki said.

Police were hoping witnesses may come forward with information to help their investigation. Anyone who saw the accident or any of the events leading up to it, was urged to call the Newberg Police Department.
