EUGENE, Ore. - A Lane County jury has indicted a 42-year-old Eugene man on charges that he killed two acquaintances and set fire to their rural home at Creswell.

Eugene Whitehall was arrested last week but a 14-count indictment issued Wednesday charges him with aggravated murder, abuse of the victims' corpses, arson and other crimes.

The Register-Guard reportsthat Whitehall pleaded not guilty to the charges Wednesday in Lane County Circuit Court.

He could face the death penalty if he is convicted of murdering Dennis Kelley and Carl McFarland on July 16.

Whitehall's attorney, Christopher Burris, said in court that the defense will be looking into issues related to Whitehall's competency.

He declined further comment. Whitehall was provided room and board while working on Kelley's pig farm on the property.
