PORTLAND -- Portland's Japanese Garden is among the 10 best public gardens in North America, according to a recent reader survey conducted by USA Today.

USA Today's Travel section had readers choose from 20 recreational and botanical public gardens across the US and Canada to determine the best of the best.

Portland's Japanese gardens ranked nine out of ten. Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, outside Philadelphia, won the top spot.

Candidates were selected by Cindy Brockway, program director for cultural resources at The Trustees of Reservations. Brockway said the candidates offered a mix of both botanical, scientifically focused, and traditional pleasure gardens.
