PORTLAND -- This year is a sports birthday of sorts for the Rose City. 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of hockey in Portland. Yes, the Portland Rose Buds started in 1914 in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association. In fact, they were the first U.S. team to play for the Stanley Cup.

The Stanley Cup was a challenge game in those days where teams could challenge for it, said Scott Petterson, collector and hockey historian.

Petterson said the Rose Buds challenged for the Cup and won the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, but they lost to Montreal in the Stanley Cup Final.

However, because the team that won the Pacific Coast League the previous year got to etch their name on the Stanley Cup, they did the same thing, Petterson said.

Now there is a celebration of 100 years of hockey with a big display at the Oregon Historical Society.

We re really excited about it, says Lori Erickson, Curator for the Museum. There are a lot of unique objects that haven t been on display before.

Petterson and the Winterhawks provided most of the items.

Oh it s wonderful. It s a dream come true, Petterson said. It s usually hidden at home in my little display room, but seeing it here on display, in honor of the city and the Winterhawks by doing this, it s fantastic.

It is a terrific display with video highlights and mementos from the Winterhawks and the Portland Buckaroos.

It s an incredible history, said Winterhawks President Doug Piper, speaking of the past 100 years. I mean if you look at the Buckaroo years and the Coliseum being built for the Buckaroos and the Championships that they won.

The Winterhawks have won their share of Championships winning the Memorial Cup twice and winning the Western Hockey League Championship last season.

It s a great run for us, said Piper. On the heels of a Championship last year so, we think we re doing the best we can to try and keep the hockey heritage alive in Portland and we couldn t be happier.

The exhibit runs through April 1.
