SHERWOOD, ORE-- One of the area's newest shopping centers is taking shape. Parkway Village at Sherwood has Walmart as the anchor store.

Since the project was announced last July, there was controversy.

Despite the protest from some residents, the project has moved forward. The outside walls of the Walmart are up. It took 60,000 concrete blocks to build the 150,000-square-foot store.

This is the first phase of what will eventually be a 50-acre development at the intersection of Highway 99 and Sherwood Road.

It sits on property once part of the Langer family farm, which goes back 150 years in Sherwood.

Gramor Development is handling the project. The company also developed two other large retail centers in Sherwood including The Langer Shopping Center with Target as the major tenant and also an adjacent Albertson's shopping center.

In addition to the hundreds of construction jobs, Parkway Village will create 600 full-time jobs when it opens this fall.

We're back in business. We're developing retail centers because their is growth in the area and the retailers feel confident to open new businesses and they can get loans and do what they need to do, said Barry Cain, president of Gramor Development.

The center will also feature an outdoor plaza, and five other buildings for an additional 60,000 square feet of space for restaurants, banking and medical services.

Already six retailers have sign on. Gramor plans to include a 4-acre wetland project that will be planted this fall Walmart plans to open in sometime this fall.
