PORTLAND -- A man who flagged down officers and said he had been robbed, turned out to be a robbery suspect himself, according to police.

A man robbed a Dutch Bros. Coffee at 13640 SE Division St. on Sunday evening. At approximately 9:30 p.m., police dispatched to the scene learned that the suspect was headed east on Southeast Division Street and may have been armed, said Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau.

Several officers and a K-9 unit searched the area but failed to turn up a suspect.

About 15 minutes after sweeping the perimeter, Mathew Paul Stockwell, 23, hailed officers and reported that he had been robbed. Stockwell, however, closely matched the description of the Dutch Brothers robbery suspect. Further investigation led officers to positively identify Stockwell as the robber, according to Simpson.

Stockwell was arrested and booked for robbery, police said.
