PORTLAND The most expensive painting ever sold at auction is headed to the Portland Art Museum.

Francis Bacon s Three Studies of Lucian Freud, which recently sold for $142 million, will be on display at the museum from Dec. 21 to Mar. 30.

Bacon was an influential Irish painter well-known for his triptychs, or series of three paintings.

The oil-on-canvas triptych that will be on display at PAM depicts Lucian Freud, a painter and Sigmund Freud s grandson, sitting from three different angles in what looks like a steel cage.

According to a New York Times report, the mystery buyer is based on the West Coast but is not Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen.

When the collector agreed to our request to exhibit the triptych, we knew that it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our visitors to see this seminal work, said Museum Director Brian Ferriso.

The painting will be featured as part of the Masterworks / Portland series.
