PORTLAND U.S. Customs officials at the Port of Portland seized toy dolls from China that contain toxic plastics, officials said Tuesday.

Ten shipments containing some 200,000 toys with high levels of the banned chemical compound phthalate were stopped by federal authorities.

Authorities also seized shipments at ports in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Norfolk, Memphis, Newark and Savannah.

More: What are phthalates?

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection the shipments had been under scrutiny since April.

The federal government banned the use of phthalates in children's products because they pose a potential health hazard.

Petrina Evas with the U.S.C.B.P. said the seizure should help bolster consumer confidence in the items they purchase.

When they go to the shelves, we want them to have confidence that these products are safe for their children, said Evans.

CBS news report stated that phthalates can increase a pregnant woman s risk of preterm delivery.

...phthalates have been linked to problems with thyroid hormone levels in women, endometriosis and breast cancer, the report said.
