WILSONVILLE, Ore. -- A woman was attacked at a busy Interstate 5 rest stop while she was alone with her 3-year-old daughter Friday outside Wilsonville.

Just after 5 p.m. at the southbound Balldock rest area, police said a mom and her daughter left their car and walked into a wooded area.

She says suddenly someone attacked her from behind, knocked her to the ground. She was apparently fearful that maybe this person was trying to abduct her child so she laid on top of her child, said Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.

The girl wasn t hurt. Her mother was.

After someone called 911, police arrived and saw her obvious injuries.

She was struck more than once and may have also been choked, Hastings said.

There is no sign of the attacker, and police don t even know if he left in a car or ran away. So far, police said they don t have any evidence to lead them in any particular direction.

Officers were joined by a plane in the sky and K-9 units on the ground. After an hour of shutting down the rest stop, it reopened to the public.

Many wanted to know about the police presence, and after they found out, they wanted to make their rest stop a short stop.

I m just scared. I want to protect everybody I m with. Just be aware of our surroundings and what s going on around us, said Renee Taylor who was traveling through.

The mother went to the hospital, where police expected she was going to be treated and released. Police were talking to her Friday night to try and get a description of the man.
