PORTLAND -- After a four-hour standoff, police have used an explosive charge and tear gas to flush a man wanted for parole violations from a southeast Portland motel room.

Police said the man was wanted for violating parole in a 1977 Nevada homicide and in a 2003 assault in Washington state.

He was identified as 57-year-old Terry Glenn Mortensen.

Police said he set the room afire Monday morning and threw knives and a hatchet at officers.

They used the charge to blow the door off its hinges, and then broke windows to fire tear gas into the room.

Police said Mortensen was taken into custody after he started to climb out a window. He was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
