PORTLAND -- A suspicious device that caused several evacuations in the Pearl District Monday morning turned out to be a box of clothes, papers and garbage, police said.

Police were called just after 9:30 to the report of a man dropping off a suspicious package inside the Chase Bank at 1035 Northwest Lovejoy Street, according to Portland Police Sgt. Pete Simpson.

Officers examined the package and called for the Metropolitan Explosives Disposal Unit to respond.

The bank and several nearby businesses were evacuated, and several streets in the area were closed while bomb technicians investigated.

At about 10:30 a.m. police determined the package was not a threat and all streets and businesses were reopened.
