ALOHA A driver accused of fleeing the scene of a car crash and leaving his passenger behind in critical condition now faces manslaughter charges following her death.

Scott Harris, 22, allegedly lost control along SW Gassner Road in Aloha early Saturday morning and hit a large tree. The car was destroyed, and 20-year-old Kalin Morris of Forest Grove was trapped inside, according to Sgt. Dave Thompson with the Washington County Sheriff s Department.

The driver was gone when police arrived and Morris had to be cut out of the car. She later died at the hospital.

The suspect's mother, Sherice Millette, told KGW that Harris and Morris were close friends.

Deputies found Harris about two hours later, walking down a nearby street, and detained him for questioning. He was later arrested after getting checked over in the hospital. Investigators believe he was driving drunk when he crashed the car.

Millette told KGW that her son doesn't remember the crash; only waking up in blackberry bushes. She said he was trying to get help when police found him.

He is so sorry, he so much wants to tell her parents how much he loved her and cared about her and that he is so sorry that she was taken away, Millette said.

The victim's grandmother told KGW the family was disturbed to learn that Harris left the scene and wondered if he had stayed and helped Morris, whether she may have survived.

Harris appeared in court Monday afternoon on several charges, including manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and DUII.
