SALEM -- An autopsy determined that the cause of death in the murder at a Salem motel was strangulation, police said.

A 22-year-old transient was arrested after a man was found murdered in room 141 at the Holiday Lodge Monday. The victim was later identified as Jeffrey Stow, also a transient.

Salem police said another transient saw 22-year-old Hugh Crow attack the unidentified victim at the Holiday Lodge on Hawthorne Avenue NE and told an acquaintance, who then called 9-1-1.

Officers later arrested Crow for murder, burglary and a parole violation. He was arraigned in court Wednesday.

The witness, Lee Rakow, 55, was also arrested for burglary and a parole violation.

Brenda Rios and her husband were staying a few doors down from the crime scene and said they heard noises in the hallway.

My husband thought he heard somebody run by late at night and I just opened the window late at night and saw three police cars out there, lined up and I didn t know what happened, she said.
