PORTLAND -- Portland Police Chief Michael Reese told KGW Wednesday he is seriously considering a run for mayor in 2012.

Raw: Reese talks to KGWabout possible run for mayor

Chief Reese said people whom he really respects approached him about running for mayor and he told them he would have a tough time leaving his current post, but leading Portland would be a unique opportunity.

I ve told the folks that have asked me that I ll give it serious consideration, Reese told KGW. I think the next four years are critically important to the health of this city and we need strong, effective leadership to move us forward in a positive direction.

Reese said he planned to make the decision in the next couple weeks, after consulting his family and community members.

It s very humbling to hear them have that confidence in me, Reese said, of the supporters who have approached him so far. But he added, I thoroughly love being the chief of police and feel very honored to have this position, leading a very complex organization through some tumultuous times.

City Commissioner Randy Leonard said he will back Reese if he runs. He s just an outstanding person who has a very strong sense of values, Leonard told KGW Wednesday.

Mayor Sam Adams -- who announced that he will not run again at the end of his current term -- appointed Reese to top cop in May 2010 after ousting then-chief Rosie Sizer. Before that, Reese served as commander of the East and Central Precincts.

I think if he [Reese] decides to run and he wins, he would be a great mayor, Adams told KGW Wednesday. I think he s got incredible smarts and problem solving; he s a forward thinker, progressive.

The story of Reese considering a run for mayor was first reported in Willamette Week.

In an interview with the Oregonian just last Monday, Reese said he had had no interest in running for mayor in 2012 but might like to run in five years.

So far, New Seasons co-founder Eileen Brady, former city commissioner Charlie Hales and State Rep. Jefferson Smith have announced plans to run for mayor in 2012.
