CORBETT, Ore. -- At the trailhead of the popular Wahkeena trail, closure signs instruct hikers to stay out. Thursday a section of the trail about 500 feet from the trailhead washed out.
The ground around the washed-out area is also cracking. Friday morning the Forest Service closed the trail to hikers. It says the recent warm-up is causing much of the snow to melt. That, plus all the recent rain, is causing a lot of run-off and erosion.
We want to remind people to be careful because it's still winter and there's very slippery, wet conditions and you can encounter this kind of thing on any trail... so be mindful of where you're going to go, said Jennifer Kevil with the USDA Forest Service.
Kevil says the trail will remain closed while crews rebuild it.
