Many homeowners in Aumsville were expected to be calling their insurance companies Wednesday.
All standard homeowner s policies do cover wind damage, according to Ron Frederickson, insurance consumer advocacy manager for Oregon's Department of Consumer and Business Services.
He also said insurance coverage should pay for living expenses away from an uninhabitable home while it's being repaired.
Frederickson cautioned homeowners about possible scams. We recommend that they contact their insurance company directly, said Frederickson.
He suggested contacting the Oregon Contractors Construction Board,
Make sure you're getting qualified repair people, and not someone taking advantage of a difficult situation, Frederickson said.
He warned against doing business with anyone who comes directly to their home offering to perform repairs.
We recommend people choose the people who repair their home the same way they would, whether or not there was some type of disaster, he said. Check with friends, acquaintances, the Better Business Bureau. You want to ask your insurance company for recommendations.
Here are tips Frederickson offered for Aumsville residents and anyone hit with such a disaster in the future:
-- Get in touch with your insurance company as soon as possible.
-- Protect your property from further damage.
-- Inventory your damaged property.
-- Make sure you have complete conversations with you insurance agent and claims representative.
