MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) -- Police in Medford says a 5-year-old boy has been shot in the abdomen after finding his father's unsecured gun.

Medford police officials say the incident happened Saturday morning at the family's trailer, as the father's boy slept.

Investigators say the boy found the father's black powder pistol in an unsecured cabinet. As the boy's eight-year-old sister tried to take the gun away from him, the gun discharged, striking the boy.

The boy was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery and is in stable condition.

Investigators say the boy's father, 46-year-old Brian Green, is a convicted felon who is not allowed to possess guns.

He was arrested on charges of assault in the third degree, recklessly endangering another, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
