PORTLAND -- You might want to think twice before texting or talking on the phone while driving. Next week, fines in Oregon will double.

The new maximum penalty for using a mobile device while driving is $500.

A lot of drivers think they can hide the phone or hold it on speaker, but police said they re not fooling anyone.

In February, a Unit 8 investigation found many drivers underestimate the risk. Distracted drivers on cell phones are to blame for hundreds of crashes every year.
