PORTLAND -- The Portland Trail Blazers are in preliminary negotiations to purchase an Arena Football League franchise and move it to Portland for the 2014 season, a source tells KGW sports commentator John Canzano.

That team would likely be the Milwaukee Mustangs, a franchise that was dormant during the 2013 season.

The source tells Canzano that the league would like to have a deal in place so it can be announced this weekend during Arenabowl XXVI in Orlando.

A spokesman for the Blazers declined any comment when reached by KGW.

This would not be Portland's first team in the AFL.

The Forest Dragons played in the Rose City for three seasons in the late 1990's before moving to Oklahoma. The team never made the playoffs while in Portland.
