PORTLAND Westbound lanes on Interstate 84 reopend Monday morning between Interstate 5 and Interstate 205 after a weekend closure for repaving.

The stretch of highway was last paved in 2002 and has since become rutted and worn.

The closure was the second of three weekend closures on I-84 as the Oregon Department of Transportation repaves 5.5 miles of the highway.

The first closure, which shutdown eastbound lanes on I-84 on July 12 - 15, caused a traffic nightmare in Portland.Crews said last week's paving went well, but traffic was jammed and is expected to be equally as bad the next two weekends.

Westbound lanes will again be closed Friday Aug. 3 to Monday Aug. 5 for the final weekend of paving.

Drivers will have several detour options including North Lombard Street, North Columbia Boulevard and Northeast Sandy Boulevard.

ODOT encouraged people who needed to get east or west to use TriMet instead.

In addition to paving the highway, the project will pave I-84 ramps, install new signs and re-stripe lanes. The work may be rescheduled if it rains.
