PORTLAND The Waterfront Blues Festival drew huge crowds on the 4th of July, and the festival hopes that translates into a record year for donations as well.

The festival, which had more than 120 musical acts scheduled to perform July 4 - 7, set its biggest donation goal yet -- $1 million.

We are within striking distance, said Jean Kempe-Ware of the Oregon Food Bank.

Kempe-Ware said more than 28,000 people attended the festival on the 4th of July, which translated into more than $300,000 in donations and 25,000 pounds of food.

Tickets to the festival were at least $10 and two cans of food on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Passes for Sunday were $50.

Organizers said Thursday s turnout was a good start toward the biggest year of donations ever for the festival.

Donations and ticket sales benefited the Oregon Food Bank, a nonprofit that fights hunger in Oregon.
