PORTLAND, Ore. -- The state has issued a health advisory for Harris Beach in Curry County.

Tests showed higher-than-normal levels of bacteria at the east end of Goat Island.

Storm water runoff and animal waste from birds such as sea gulls and even pets can cause high fecal levels in ocean water.

Health officials recommend visitors avoid wading in nearby creeks or in discolored water and staying away from runoff flowing into the ocean.

Even if there's no advisory, officials say it's best not to swim in the ocean 48 hours after a rainstorm.
