SALEM A hit-and-run driver plowed into a 14-year-old girl in a Salem crosswalk Friday evening.

Deputies are looking for a tan mid-1980s pickup truck that didn t stop for two teenage girls who had a walk signal while crossing Lancaster Drive Southeast at Durbin Avenue Southeast at around 7:45 p.m., said Don Thomson with the Marion County Sheriff s Office.

One of the girls jumped out of the way at the last second, but 14-year-old Kathryn Staudinger of Salem was struck by the truck that was headed northbound on Lancaster Drive, Thomson said.

Staudinger was taken to a Salem hospital before being moved to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland where she was upgraded from serious to fair condition.

Bystanders who witnessed the crime immediately jumped into action to help Staudinger. Annette Johnson works at a hospital and pulled up right after the crash.

I got out and there was a young lady on the ground. She was hurting. I asked if she was okay. I had her talking and she was conscious, Johnson said.

Anyone with information about the suspect vehicle was asked to call police.
