Several athletes with ties to the Pacific Northwest were highlighted before and after the Olympic games, and a select few were able to bring home gold for the home team.

University of Portland graduate Megan Rapinoe and Richland, Washington native Hope Solo won the gold as part of the U.S. women's soccer team, who avenged their World Cup loss to Japan with a 2-1 victory. Rapinoe's UP teammate Christine Sinclair played for Canada.

Portland native and Beaverton High School graduate Elsie Windes won her first gold medal when the U.S. beat Spain 8-5 in women's water polo. Windes won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Bend native and Eugene resident Ashton Eaton was already the world record holder in the men's decathlon, but cemented his status as World's Greatest Athlete when he took home the gold.

Nathan Adrian, of Bremerton, Washington picked up a medal in each of his events, winning the gold in the men's 100m freestyle and the 4x100m medley relay and taking home the silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay.

As part of the Redeem Team, Lake Oswego's own Kevin Love won the gold when the U.S. men's team beat Spain 107-100 in the basketball final on the last day of the Olympics.

And as part of the women's basketball team, the Seattle Storm's Sue Bird helped the U.S. beat France, 86-50, to bring home the country's 5th straight gold medal.

Other Northwest athletes who brought home medals for Team USA included Galen Rupp of Portland, who finished the men's 10,000m just behind partner and gold medal winner MoFarah, and Ryan Bailey of Salem, who brought home sliver as the anchor of the men's 4x100m relay team.
