PORTLAND -- A registered sex offender stabbed and sexually assaulted a 10-year-old boy in a Portland Wendy's restroom Sunday, police said.

Police responded just after 2 p.m. to the Wendy's restaurant in the 2900 block of NE Sandy Boulevard. They were told that 49-year-old Adam Brown had grabbed a boy and forced him into the restroom. Then, Brown tried to sexually assault the boy, who screamed and started fighting back, according to said Sgt. Pete Simpson with the Portland Police Bureau.

Although these events are very rare, very uncommon to have something like this happen, it scares the living daylights out of everybody, Simpson added.

During the struggle, Brown stabbed the boy was several times, Simpson said.

The boy's father heard screams and tried to open the restroom door, but it was locked from the inside. A manager brought a key, then Brown unlocked the door and pushed the boy out, Simpson said.

The boy was rushed to a hospital and underwent surgery. His stab wounds would have been life-threatening had he not received immediate attention, Simpson said.

Patrons pushed against the bathroom door, trapping Brown inside until police arrived and evacuated the restaurant. Brown told police he had a gun, so a Special Emergency Response Team was activated, Simpson said.

Brown surrendered about two hours later and now faces several charges including attempted murder, four counts of first-degree assault, first-degree sex abuse, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree arson, coercion, and furnishing false information to a police officer.

Police found a knife in the restroom believed to be used in the attack, Simpson said. No gun was found.

Brown pleaded not guilty in court Monday. His bail was set at $2 million.

Meantime, the boy was released from the hospital Tuesday to recover at home.

The state sex offender registry lists Brown as a predatory sex offender known to target children ages 2 to 8. He was on parole for abusing children when the attack in Wendy's occurred.

Court records showed in the early 1990s, Brown was charged with 43 counts, including attempted murder and rape, in connection with a series of sexual assaults against children inDouglas County. Prosecutors said he exposed several children to HIV through sexual contact but those charges were dropped in the plea deal.

He ultimately pleaded guilty to three counts of sodomy and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. He was released after serving 11 years.

Last year, Brown had his parole transferred fromDouglas to Multnomah County, where he was being supervised as a high risk offender.
