PORTLAND -- Sewer systems overwhelmed by recent rains have resulted in a spill directly into the Willamette River.
The river should be avoided for 48 hours after rainfall ends, said city spokesman Linc Mann. Hands should be washed if contact is made and any fish caught should be thoroughly cooked to kill bacteria, he said.
The forecast calls for showers through Thursday, with some clearing in the Portland area and valley on Friday.
The massive and expensive Combined Sewer Overflow project, also called Big Pipe, won't be entirely complete until this December.
Until then, heavy rainfall will continue to trigger overflow episodes, Mann said. After December, the city should average just a handful of overflows, down from about 50 a year, he said.
