PORTLAND -- Deputies rescued a man Friday morning after he was found floating down the Willamette River, clinging to a log.

Michael Lewis Wilcox, 34, was rescued by the Portland Fire Bureau after reports came in around 7:30 a.m.that a man was floating down the river and hanging from a log near the shore at 808 North River Street, according to Lt. Steve Alexander of the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

Wilcox was unresponsive when he was take from the water. Crews took him by ambulance to the hospital where he remained in critical condition, Alexander said.

There was no further information on why he was in the river.
