PORTLAND A man was killed when a drunk driver crashed into a power pole with six people in the car in Northeast Portland early Sunday morning.

Around 6 a.m., the driver lost control of his car and slammed into the power pole at Northeast Fremont Street and Northeast 102nd Avenue, according to Lt. Derrick Peterson with the Multnomah County Sheriff s Office.

The right rear passenger was killed and a second passenger was seriously injured when he was ejected from the vehicle, Peterson said. Neither man was reportedly wearing a seatbelt, but deputies said it wouldn t have mattered for the man who died because of the severity of the direct impact of the crash.

One of the passengers took off on foot and is still missing. The other passengers were taken to the hospital.

The driver was not seriously hurt and will be released from the hospital and then booked in the Multnomah County Jail on DUII manslaughter, assault, and hit-and-run charges. He also has an outstanding warrant of his arrest.

Police have not released any names until the victim s family is notified.
