PORTLAND The holidays are often a time of giving back by donating to nonprofits, many of whom offer more services for the needy during the holiday season.
But this year, stretched budgets and reduced donations are causing some charities to have problems lending a helping hand.
Community Warehouse on Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard is the only nonprofit furniture bank in the region.
They partner with more than 100 social service agencies and Portland Public Schools, providing essential household items to needy families.
We re helping people from all walks of life, said Rena Satre Meloy, the communications manager for Community Warehouse. They all come to the warehouse and get to walk around and actually pick out everything that they need to turn their house into a home.
Meloy said they receive around 60 requests a week. But recently, donations have slowed.
The warehouse was nearly empty last week. Meloy said they were in need of basic items like silverware.
Community Warehouse has two drop-off locations: 3939 NE MLK Blvd. and 9380 SW Nyberg St. in Tualatin.
