PORTLAND -- The Southwest Jefferson Street on-ramp to U.S. Highway 26 will be closed during the day, weekdays from Oct. 11 to Dec. 23, said Susan Hanson of the Oregon Department of Transportation. The ramp will also be closed on Saturdays in Nov. from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The ramp will be closed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. while crews work on installing a steel mesh net over the hillside that will protect drivers from rockfalls.

Occasional rockfalls pose a hazard to cars, said Hanson. Work crews will clear vegetation and install netting throughout the fall. Eventually new plantings will restore the area's green look, according to ODOT.

During the ramp closure, drivers heading to the Sunset Highway westbound will detour from Southwest Jefferson Street to Northwest 13th Avenue, then to the Southwest Clay Street entrance (click on graphic to enlarge image).

The detour route will be posted.
