PORTLAND, Ore A fisherman drowned after jumping from a boat into the Columbia River after his fishing pole fell in the water and he tried to get it back Tuesday, deputies said.
The Multnomah County sheriff's Office identified the man as 60 year old John Eugene Deranleau from Portland, Ore.
Paramedics performed CPR on Deranleaun for an extended period of time near the boat ramps at Chinook Landing Marine Park. He was declared dead at the hospital.
Deranleau was reportedly not wearing a life vest when he went into the cold Columbia River. He was fishing with another man on a boat who tried to get him out of the water.
By the time he got maneuvered around, he already had problems in the water. He was face down in the water at that point the fisherman was able to get him back to the boat but not onto the boat, said Lt. Steve Alexander with the Multnomah County Sheriff s Office.
A fisherman from another boat eventually came to help recover Deranleau from the water.
Other fishermen told KGW the water is still cold and the current is strong out on the river.
