PORTLAND -- Deputies said they captured a man who may have robbed two banks in Washington County as he was getting ready to rob a third bank Saturday.

Bradley Houtman, 25, was arrested without incident Saturday morning after getting spotted by bank employees.

It all started just after 11 a.m. Friday, when employees at the Umpqua Bank at 7365 NW Barnes Road called deputies about a suspicious person circling the parking lot in a black BMW wearing a mask and gloves, said Sgt. Bob Ray with the Washington County Sheriff s Office.

The employees said the car was the same type that was used when the same bank was robbed in December by a man with an assault rifle, Ray said.

Deputies swarmed to the area but could not locate the vehicle. On Saturday about 9:39 a.m., employees at a Chase Bank across the street from the Umpqua Bank called deputies after seeing a black BMW drive into their parking lot.

Deputies again swarmed the area and spotted the BMW. The driver took off down Northwest 84h Avenue but stopped when it hit a dead-end.

Houtman was immediately arrested and deputies found a significant amount of evidence including an assault rifle in his car, Ray said.

Houtman was booked in the Washington County Jail without bail. He is facing federal charges for bank robbery.
