ST HELENS, Ore -- Police identified the man who was shot and killed by police near St. Helens Friday night.

Police initially thought the suspect was a woman, but after positively identifying him, investigators corrected the mistake.

Josiah Fischer, 27, of St. Helens led Oregon State Police troopers through parts of South Columbia County on a high-sped pursuit that ended with him being shot and killed by an officer on Hazen Road near Stone Road, said Sheriff Jeff Dickerson with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

It is unclear how many shots were fired, but neighbors reported hearing at least four shots.

The troopers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave pending a review of the shooting through the district attorney's office. This is standard procedure when police use deadly force.
