PORTLAND - Neighbors in West Linn and Tualatin are fighting to stop a composting facility.

S&H Logging wants to build a composting facility at what is now a Christmas tree farm at the corner of Southwest Stafford and Borland Road. Neighbors say the facility would sit right across the street from two schools.

Many worry not only about the odor their kids would be exposed to, but also the potential health risks from the dust.

I just think there's a better place for it than across the street from two schools where thousands of kids play on the weekends, neighbor Kate Hoots said. I believe in composting. I think it s great. I think facilities like this do have a place in our society today, but I m just not sure they belong across the street from two schools.

An S&H Logging spokesperson says the proposed facility would compost only yard debris, not food waste, and would use the most advanced technology to eliminate the smell.

The bottom line is that we do not want to produce odors that anybody off-site will find objectionable, spokesman Will Gehr said.
