CROOKED RIVER RANCH, Ore. - A 12-year-old Damascus girl was seriously injured Thursday when she slipped and fell into a canyon north of Redmond.

The girl was vacationing with her family at the Crooked River Ranch, playing with other children, when she fell down the canyon, as first reported by KTVZ-TV.

It took two hours for rescuers to get Allison Billard safely out of the canyon, using a rope and pulley system. She was rushed by helicopter to St. Charles Hospital in Bend, then airlifted to a Portland hospital in serious condition.

Crooked River Ranch Fire Chief Tim McLaren said such falls were not unusual, and crews average about five rescues a year. Thursday's mishap was the first for this year, he told KTVZ.
