PORTLAND -- High school students from Portland walked off their campuses Thursday morning to protest standardized testing, traveling to Salem to take their message directly to state lawmakers.

The students do not want the tests eliminated for all, but were pressing for an opt-out clause.

The students believe the tests create an inaccurate depiction of knowledge, calling them absurd. The tests also punish students by race and class, they said.

I am a student, not a test score, read one protest sign at a gathering of several dozen students at Grant High School.
