PORTLAND When you drive on city streets, there are some where you are risking your life more than others.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation has named the High Crash Corridors it will target for safety improvement this year.

They are; East and West Burnside, SW Powell and NE Sandy Boulevards.

Short-term solutions are things you can do with signs, things you can do with pavement markings -- putting in a crosswalk is a great example, said PBOT spokesperson Dan Anderson.

The program to lower crashes on Portland s most dangerous streets began in 2010, and named 10 main arterials where fatalities involving vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians were highest.

The first street the city took on, was 82nd Avenue. Some physical improvements and an education and enforcement campaign seem to be working. Data shows some crashes are down in some key areas of 82nd.

Since we started working on these improvements to make it safer, we ve started to see some of the data move in the right direction, that s fewer fatalities, fewer crashes, said Anderson.

Along fast-moving SE Powell Blvd. traffic filled the lanes, people moved on foot on sidewalks and crosswalks, and bikes mixed into the congestion as well.

It seems like everyone is in a rush on Powell, it feels like it could be a little dangerous sometimes, said 20 year-old driver Dylan Cooper. His passenger pointed out his hope, that everyone take it easy, to make streets safer.

Just got a find a better way to get everyone to not be so rushed, I mean, it s pretty hard to ask the whole city to just not hurry up, said Julian Buss.

PBOT would agree, and acknowledges that drivers and others need to slow down, be aware of your surroundings and follow the rules of the road.

If you are interested in attending a meeting , the city will hold one for Burnside on February 27th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Buckman School Cafeteria, for Sandy Boulevard on March 6th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Hollywood Senior Center.

A meeting for Powell Blvd. has yet to be scheduled.
