GASTON, Ore. -- Some holiday mail was set on fire in front of the Gaston Post Office Monday, investigators said.

Fire crews were called at about 6 a.m. to the scene, where they found smoke coming from inside the mailbox, said Ken Bilderback of the Gaston Rural Fire District. A gasoline can with a wick attached was found inside the mailbox.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire in time to save much of the mail, but many pieces were heavily damaged by gasoline and water, Bilderback said.

The arson case was turned over to the United States Postal Service and the Washington County Sheriff's Office for investigation and prosecution.

Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity between 5 and 6 a.m. was asked to call the sheriff's office at (503) 629-0111. Anyone who deposited mail in the outside drop box should contact the post office.
