HILLSBORO, Ore. -- A driver passing by a Hillsboro home Tuesday morning notice flames coming from inside, so he stopped and put the fire out while calling 911, fire officials said.

Crews were called just before 9:30 a.m. to a fire in the 400 block of Southeast Walnut Street. The caller told dispatchers he was standing on the porch and using a garden hose to extinguish the fire, according to Bruce Montgomery of Hillsboro Fire and Rescue.

Fire crews arrived to find the house full of smoke and they confirmed that nobody was inside. They said the passerby, Brian Love, had already knocked down the flames. They began clearing the smoke from the house.

I was just driving by and saw smoke and flames coming through the front window, Love said. It looked like the fire was right there so I got the hose and sprayed water through the broken window as I called 911.

The cause of the fire was being investigated. The damage to the front of the home was estimated at $2,000.
