BEND, Ore. (AP) -- Two brothers have pleaded not guilty to charges of fatally shooting three sheepdogs in the Ochoco Mountains northeast of Prineville.

The Bend Bulletin reports that 59-year-old Craig Johnson of Bend pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to animal abuse and criminal mischief.

His brother, 66-year-old Paul Johnson of Roseburg pleaded not guilty to the same charges earlier in November.

The two were indicted in September after the animals' bodies were discovered in a grazing allotment.

Deputies reported the brothers, who were hunting, said they thought the dogs were wild.

The owner, Gordon Clark of Madras, told sheriff's deputies the dogs protected his sheep, grazing in the area.
