New clothes, new shoes, new backpacks they re all things that kids look forward to at the start of school.

But, not everyone can afford these things. That s why some organizations in the Portland area are stepping up to help kids out.

We ve got several families that are low-income, and they re making it, and they re doing everything they can for their families, said Amy Bogdon with the Salvation Army. They work very hard, but they re not able to do, the 'extra.'

Bogdon said sometimes kids need that extra to feel welcome at school.

Going back to school isn t always a very exciting thing for kids, especially if you go to school and you don t have new things like everybody else does, she said.

The Salvation Army and companies like Target are helping kids get ready for school. Kids like 7-year old Jamoryonna Lowery, a soon-to-be third grader who was able to buy new clothes for school thanks to the Salvation Army s program.

She was one of 100 kids that received an $80 gift card to Target to buy school clothes and other supplies. The Salvation Army will be giving away hundreds of backpacks and school supplies on August 31st.

Kids and families can sign up at their local Salvation Army Corps or click here for more information.

There is also a free Health & Back to School Extravaganza on September 1st from 2:00pm 5:00pm at The Salvation Army Moore St. Corps at 5325 N. Williams Ave in Portland.
