Charles Joseph Lake, 21, was charged with aggravated murder and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the murder. He was jailed with no bail.

Police said Lake is a mixed martial arts fighter. He does not have a criminal history.

Court papers indicated that the two had met just hours before the murder. Surveillance video showed Lake and Morton entering the high-rise building together.

A woman who lives in the building told detectives she heard a loud commotion in the apartment above her. She said afterward, she took the elevator upstairs and saw the suspect enter the elevator with blood on his hand.

Police said the Lake had Morton's watch and wallet in his possession when he was arrested and later admitted beating, stabbing and robbing the victim.

Lake's father in court Monday described his son as a good kid.
