PORTLAND -- Police officers found empty shell casings while patrolling the south Park Blocks after an Occupy Portland demonstration Saturday.

The casings appeared to be .22 caliber and 9 mm, according to Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau.

He said a cluster of them were located on the east sidewalk of SW Park Avenue behind the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, in an area where demonstrators had been standing.

He added that during a protest on an earlier date officers had reported someone in the crowd throwing empty .223 shell casings at them.

It is not clear why or who is bringing empty shell casings to a demonstration, Simpson said.

There were no reports of shots fired during either protest.

Portland State University Sociology Professor Randy Blazak told KGWanarchists often wear belts made of spent shell casings and one of them could have fallen apart during the protest.
