PORTLAND A 59-year-old Portland woman has vanished under what detectives described as suspicious circumstances and they want to question the man she lived with.

Renee Sandidge-Crowell was last seen at the home in the 3900 block of Northeast 66th Avenue Saturday around 6 a.m., according to Portland police. Neighbors said she rented the basement of the home from Gary Alan Lewis, 61, who lived upstairs.

Police responded for a welfare check Saturday. A Special Emergency Response Team was soon called to the scene and fired tear gas into the home. Some area residents were evacuated but police gave few details about what prompted officers to fire the tear gas.

Homicide detectives were later called to the scene and said Sandidge-Crowell's disappearance was suspicious, based on a number of factors. They described items found in the home as security features which required exceptional safety efforts to safely overcome.

A noise, which police said was not gunfire, was also reported.

On Monday, Sgt. Pete Simpson with the Portland Police Bureau said investigators want to question Lewis about the circumstances at his home. Lewis was described as a white man standing 6 foot 2 inches tall, weighing around 190 pounds, with gray hair and a gray beard.

Officers continued to collect evidence at the home on Monday.

Sandidge-Crowell was described as white, 5 feet 2 inches tall and 100 pounds. She has red hair and brown eyes and was last seen on foot.

Police said there was no danger to the public at this time but they hope the public can help them find Sandidge-Crowell and Lewis. Evacuated neighbors have been able to return to their homes.

Neighbors told KGW that Sandidge-Crowell moved into the basement as a renter about a year ago. But over the past several months there was a lot of trouble at the home, with police responding numerous times.

I m not surprised by this because my wife s been telling the police every time they come out here that something bad is going to happen and something bad has happened, said neighbor Chris Mitchel.

Anyone with information about Sandidge-Crowell s or Lewis' whereabouts was asked to call 911 immediately. Anyone with non-emergency information about the situation should call Detective Slater at 503-823-9319.
