BLAINE, Wash. -- A California man was arrested near the Blaine border crossing Monday and charged with attempting to join the terrorist group called al-Qaida in Iraq

Federal prosecutors say Nicholas Teausant, 20, of Acampo, Calif. was attempting to get into Canada and planned to travel to Syria to join the organization, which is formally called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

Prosecutors did not immediately detail what led them to make the arrest.

Teausant was in the process of being released from the U.S. Army National Guard

Teausant was charged in a criminal complaint filed in Sacramento with a single count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. It wasn't immediately clear if he has a lawyer.

If convicted, Teausant faces 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
