PORTLAND A judge Wednesday reduced the bail for a Yamhill reserve officer accused of critically assaulting his girlfriend s 4-year-old son on New Year s Eve.

Michael Abo, 34, appeared in a Yamhill County court for the hearing where a judge agreed to reduce his bail from $1 million to $500,000.

The boy was in critical condition at Oregon Health & Science University with seven broken ribs and a severe brain injury.

His grandfather told KGW he was quite upset after hearing that Abo's bail was cut in half.

He needs to stay in jail. Now I am worried. Who is going to be watching? I mean those electronic monitoring things can be removed from your feet. What is to keep him from going to the hospital and getting my grandson and finishing it, said Steve Sengezer, the boy s grandfather.

Abo claimed the boy was injured in a fall off a stairwell.

He is due back in court on Jan. 13.
