HILLSBORO, Ore. One man died and two people were injured in a six-car crash that closed all westbound lanes of Northeast Cornell Road at Northeast 48th Avenue in Hillsboro Thursday, authorities said.
Witnesses told police a driver slumped over behind the wheel and his car accelerated into the intersection before his vehicle T-boned a mini-van.
Lt. Mike Rouches with Hillsboro police said the two cars were then hit by four other cars that piled into them.
Lawrence and Marlene Payne got caught in the pileup.
I looked up in my review mirror and saw a red car start to tumble, Lawrence said. I immediately knew I was going to get hit.
Marlene Payne was shocked.
I just felt a jerk and thought, Holy cow, that was a lot,' said Marlene Payne.
The two got out and tried to help and checked on pickup driver.
We got to the guy and his airbags had gone off and everything, said Lawrence Payne. I checked his pulse and he had a pulse.
The pickup driver died before paramedics could help. Police said it appears he passed away from a health issue, not the crash.
Officials from the Hillsboro Fire Department said two people were taken by ambulance to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. near the Hillsboro Airport.
